1150 km rivers & 680 lakes

Five large rivers (sv. älvar) are located in the Municipality of Pajala, of which the Torne River and Kalix River are classified as national rivers and are therefore protected from hydropower development. The day of the national rivers is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of August.

During the summer, our rivers are inhabited by four times more salmon than the municipality alone. But our many rivers and lakes hold many other fish species: pike, perch, crisply, whitefish, burbot, grayling and trout.

There are several fishery management areas within the Municipality of Pajala that require a fishing licence. If you are looking for a guide or a private fishing tour you can find several professional fishing companies further down the page. And if you need fishing equipment there are vendors in central Pajala.

Welcome to Pajala and your fishing experience above the Arctic circle!
